“My name is Tak Jen. I am 65 years old and I live in Phum Kho, in Sneung Commune, Battambang."

“I have twelve children, and two of my daughters live right by me. They are both married, each with two children.
“I live with one of my daughters and her children. Her husband has left with a new wife already. Often though, my daughter is gone to work, so I am the one to watch my grandchildren. They are 10 years old and 6 years old."

“I came to this village to live with my daughter when she got married ten years ago, but I am originally from Kampot province. My husband still lives there."

“I have had health problems for several years. I have high blood pressure and arthritis in my knees and elbows. I tried traditional Khmer medicine and pills from the pharmacy, but nothing really helped me feel any better."

“I have been a member of the OPA for more than ten years. OPA volunteers come to my house every month to teach me about health and hygiene. They have taught me about exercise, how to know if I am really sick, how to have enough energy, clean water and food, and nutrition."

“Ever since the OPA started providing education, my health has improved. I do small exercises every day and try to move around so that I do not get stiff or swollen. I also try to get enough sleep and drink plenty of water every day. Since then, my blood pressure has gone down and I go to the health center when I am sick."

“I can go to the health center for free now, because I have a document that says I am very poor. The OPA helped many older people, including me, get this document so that we can receive healthcare and other benefits."

“The health education has also had an effect on the food that I eat and prepare for my grandchildren. I prepare many more vegetables now, and I know how to wash them so that our family does not get sick from our food. We eat greens, pumpkins, squash, and cucumbers. I also try to find money to give them meat or fish a few times a week.
“My grandchildren are very healthy now too. Their mother has been gone for a year, but I have not had to buy any medicine for them since she left, because they have not had even diarrhea or a headache."

“It is so nice to be able to educate my grandchildren about what I learn from the OPA. Everything that the volunteers teach me, I teach my grandchildren right away. I make them watch me clean the vegetables so that they can do it themselves too, and they also know how to clean the water filtration system. I make sure they wash their hands often, and the older ones teach the younger ones now too."

“Without education from the OPA, my health would still be very poor. I have hope for my future though, especially when I see my grandchildren healthy and happy".

The British Heart Foundation is a charity close to my own - if you'll excuse the pun - heart. My Dad had the first of three heart attacks in August 1996, when he was just 47 years old. He went on to have a quadruple heart bypass in November of that year. Unfortunately, 3 of the 4 grafts have completely broken down and the 4th graft is too close to his heart to have repeat surgery to replace/strengthen it. He also has a hereditary heart disease, so at only 62, his health and lifestyle are limited, and his expected lifespan is not great - he's already living on 'borrowed time', as the bypass only 'guaranteed' him 10 years.

Most of my Dad's heart problems could have been prevented. He was a heavy smoker, had a stressful, high-powered job, rarely excercised and loved fried and fatty foods. We should all be thinking about our heart health and what we can do to keep as healthy as possible.

There's lots you can do to keep your heart healthy - whatever your age.
Taking exercise, eating a healthy diet, encouraging children to be heart healthy and being aware of dangers such as smoking, drinking, high blood pressure and stress.

Prevention really is better than cure. People of all ages who are physically active are half as likely to get cardiovascular disease as those that are inactive.And a healthy diet helps to reduce your risk of developing heart disease, or if you've already got heart problems it will help to protect your heart.
